This Euro-merica we appear to be living in is the Land of Have-It-Right-Now, as you know. A land where qualities such as 'imagination' and 'potential' are looked at with the same nausea as a maggot crawling out of a kebab. What chance for a band like Such Great Heights, then? By the look of them, this Teesside quintet record songs in between taking their SATs and, perhaps, delivering newspapers to overweight men called Gerald who buy and sell chunks of the Pennines. Not a lot, you may very well be sniggering behind your copy of the Ultimate Guide To The Week In Music, but then imagination and potential have a habit of confounding us. So it could be that this amphetamined mash-up of Sleeper, the Subways, the Sundays and various other bands beginning with the letter 'S' could find themselves writing that song or, even, that album. None of the three debut recordings on offer here are all that, however.

Enormous titles with little or no obvious relation to the songs themselves show a band with a brain who don't take themselves too seriously - a relief in these depressing times of 'Oasis are BACK!!!' dead-headlines. The usual angsty lyrics about love, escape and shit discos contain the occasional flash of something more - the 'paper bullets to the brain' in What Happens., for example. .Wizard? is by far the strongest track with a great central guitar riff that could set a crowd to pogo-kill. The others sound much weaker, watered-down in comparison. Shouty backing vocals by the lads never did AC/DC any harm, but here they sound feeble and lairy at the same time, which cheapens things. But ignore my picky prattle. I say let us sit and wait and watch. They could do it.
