Since he stopped playing guitar in Suede and the short lived Tears, Bernard Butler has been using his role as producer to live vicariously through other bands (The Libertines, Manics, Black Kids, Duffy), by making them sound a bit like The Tears or Suede. The Libertines are probably an exception, he tended to get the best out of them ('What A Waster', 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun'), but the string arrangements on recent Manics' records and the stifling sheen on Duffy and the Black Kids' albums are clearly the touch of Butler.
Fortunately, New Zealander's Cut Off Your Hands seem to have followed The Libs, and Butler has helped them hone their sound rather than recreating his own. 'Expectations' begins riotously, and it's easy to see why Les Savy Fav and Foals are fans; in fact, it even sounds like Foals might if they were more 'pop' and less 'math', and they faced the audience. Reminiscent of early We Are Scientists, this bodes well for their album later in the autumn.
