How nice it is to see a band naming themselves after an area of Surrey, despite being from Leeds. Alright, I know they're probably spinning on the name of the villain in Texas Chainsaw Massacre but I'd like to think they were being a bit more thoughtful. There should be more of this kind of pride in the UK - otherwise the only time it crops up is with flag-waving, bullet-brained bigots.
Musically we don't have a great deal of originality here, but thankfully this is offset by just the right amount of raw live sound and positive energy. Having a guitar sound worshipping at the altar of Kim Thayil isn't a bad thing either, of course - in fact, the 'post-grunge' bands seem to be major influences here, generally. You're never far from a Soundgarden-y riff or a Pearl Jam drift. Vocally things are a trifle weak, despite Losing Faith's Zep-isms but you're still left wondering how Bush managed to scale the dizzy heights of American fame doing the same sort of thing not nearly half as well.
Leatherhead seems tailor-made for stadiums. Whether it's as support for yet another airbrushed gang of marketing tools or bestriding matters in their own right remains to be seen.
