Best album of the year? Quite possibly, it's probably a bit early to say, but I don't think I'm going to hear anything that comes anywhere close. So, you enquire about what wonders of aural excellence emit from my speakers? Right, I shall begin.
I could be lazy; I could band around the stoner rock tag and leave it at that. To be fair it's a relatively simple to describe, late 60's to mid 70's heavy rock is a strong influence here, in fact you could go as far as to say it's the main, or even sole influence. You'd be missing a fair few tricks though, there's a solid injection of Space Rock which runs through the whole release, clinging to every guitar riff, solo and bass line. There's the occasional tendency for certain songs to launch off and circle in an almost ambient orbit, a good example being on "God Bless The Little Angels", before returning through the entry window and back to mission control. Likewise there's also a (somewhat drunken) folk influence that comes into play in several places, "Patience & Fortitude" being one of these where the whole track sounds like sitting in a low lit room during a one man late night hard drinking session. And did someone say Hendrix? I'd be very surprised if his ghost didn't mix and produce this (it didn't, I was). This is a thunderous release, unlike the majority of LPs in this genre it quite literally blasts you like a test fire from NASA's Apollo series, it's almost louder than Blue Cheer's "Outsideinside"! The fact it's catchy and melodic is a huge bonus.
Much like a less folksy Dead Meadow teaming up with a less bluesy Nebula and a crate of bourbon. Well worth your money.
