It's big, it's hard, it's rock and should be cheesy as hell - but it isn't. Brighton's Furyon slice the ears with some crisp playing and sharp production here, in a made-for-stadia anthem. The all-important vocal sits commandingly, too and makes a good fist of providing a missing link between Sammy Hagar and Rob Halford. There is a slight worry that things could tip into Chad Kroeger territory but thankfully this doesn't materialise. Obvious comparisons with Tool and Dream Theatre are cock-on and I would also add a call on early 1990s grungy metal stoners Mindfunk. Second track Voodoo Me continues all this reminiscence by being Soundgarden a-go-go. Furyon are a touch cleaner than their American seniors, however.
Some of the 'progressive' sections sound too fussy, with guitars briefly tussling with drums in what sounds like a fight to get to the front of the stage. Much better are the catchy twin-guitar power chords that drive much of what's on offer here. And let's ignore the barely decipherable lyrics, shall we, and concentrate on banging our heads more. The extended version of Souvenirs gets you more Dream Theatre-ness, showing the band more than capable of some rock soundscapes that don't have one immediately reaching for a sick bag, and over two minutes more stompy pomp. Surely this band are poised to take over from where Whitesnake keep leaving off - and with a damn sight more promise.
