I fully expected to hate this. The Guardian described the band as "the folk-pop Ting Tings", and most of the press release seems to be concerned with the use of one of their songs in some teen comedy and on a Doritos advert. It's like they took all the things I hate, distilled them down and put them on paper. I wasn't looking forward to playing the CD.
But you know what? I don't hate it at all. I'm not that hugely enamoured with it either, but it's not the aural horror I was expecting. There's something very sweet about the boy / girl vocals and layered instruments (lots of strings and banjos) that it's almost impossible not to warm to. There may be a hint too much morris dancing and not enough Woodie Guthrie, but there's a surprising variety without losing coherence.
