The Mirimar Disaster - Volumes

It's always good when a band turns out how you knew they would eventually. The Mirimar Disaster always strayed a bit close to their influences in the past but maybe it's the slimmed down line-up or maybe it's the time afforded to construct this EP. Whatever it was, it's a good thing. The 5 tracks on here all have an individual identity but all sound like The Mirimar Disaster. Opener "Alms For Strangers" comes across like Keelhaul and Will Haven, all twisting, titanic sounding riffs and grooves, ably pushed to the front by a quality production job.

Building on those Mastodon, Isis, man-rock influences has proven to work well for the Sheffield boys. The EP moves along through more of their huge riffs, build-ups and crescendos, melodic breaks and dual vocal screaming/shouting that convinces more than anything they have done in the past did.

It's the surprise vocals of Maria Christopher (27) that draw "The Town Of Empty Sound" to a close, that make you realise how far they have developed. It's a more laid-back than usual track of clean picked guitars and swells before the closing vocals lift it at the final hurdle.

This is easily the best thing they have done so far and on this evidence then a full length could turn out to be something very special indeed.
