Just in case the unreadably spiky band logo and the bored-in-History cartoon of undead Samurai on the cover didn't give it away, Impiety are unadulterated Black Metal - in fact, 'the leading Blackend [sic] Death Metal act hailing from Singapore', no less, and have been finding ways to gutturally rage about Satan and war since 1990. Respect is due to their devotion and stamina - particularly that of main man Shyaithan ('Simon' ? 'Nathan' ?) the band's deliverer of 'desecration and death' - that's Black Metal for 'guitar and vocals' for all you giggling dilettantes out there. He's not the drummer. Impiety have tapped through a few drummers in their time and the latest to occupy the stool of Armageddon is 'Tremor' ('Trevor' ?).
Well, I say 'drummers' but really that's just force of habit - from the sounds of scratty evil on display here, the rest of the band were playing along to someone firing an amplified paintball gun at some dead pigs. After some vocoder-like chanting and sounds of medieval battle, we are thrown into an inferno, an 18-million BPM nightmare which doesn't really let up until the final track - and even then, only briefly. The first three tracks could very well be the same track, since the tempo is at constant break-leg speed and the guitars a bass-less buzzsaw grind, with Mr. Death corpse-grunting his way through lines such as; 'worship war, praise Satan', 'dominator, in praise of war' and, ironically, 'endless pain'. Songs to really hate your parents to. In fact, hate anyone and anything - go on, push the boat out and set fire to it. Metaphorically, of course.
So far, so tortuous. Their cover of Sarcofago's gentle ballad The Black Vomit has them pounding even faster, if that's possible, with a guest guitar solo by Ashir from fellow cross-invertors Infernal Execrator, which lasts all of about five seconds. At War With Temujin starts well, with distant memories of Sepultura but soon the need for speed takes over and we're back to where we were - a cradle of unending filth.
