Fear My Thoughts - Isolation

The first thing that struck me on presented with this was the lack of musical referencing on the PR sheet and the accompanying case. Which usually means that the band are slightly direction-less or they defy description. Fear My Thoughts sort of fall somewhere between these two poles.

Possessing a quality level of ability and musical proficiency that is more than commendable amongst the modern metal/hardcore crowd these days, FMT’s certainly know how to use dynamics to their advantage. Opener "The Blind Walk Over The Edge" comes in with this almost King Crimson esque chord progression, very 70’s sounding with Martin Fischer’s melodic vocals pushing through. But this is the only problem I have with this album. The band seems to be touching so many bases that they have no identity of their own almost. In the length of this album I was reminded of King Crimson, nu-metal, Meshuggah, Faith No More, Killswitch Engage and Papa Roach.

If that sounds like a sweet combination then you're obviously retarded. The band doesn't sound half assed or anything, it just seems to shift around too much and in doing so loses all power the build-ups would have created.

But, like Shadows Fall before them, rewind back a few albums and they would have said the same. So maybe there is something special in here. Just not yet.
