Truthfully I was expecting more from Wade MacNeil's post, sorry hiatus, Alexisonfire offering. That's not to say that 'Send Flowers' is rubbish, it just doesn't deliver (fnar fnar) - in short this just doesn't really go anywhere, and frustratingly there's loads of opportunity on this record to explore the interesting avenues that it genuinely creates, however it just seems to run out of steam prematurely quite a lot.
These couldn't have been Alexisonfire songs, and McNeill has done well to separate the two. To be perfectly honest I wouldn't have known it was anything to do with him had I not read it. McNeill recruits likeminded musician friends all over the album and members of label mates Cancer Bats, Attack In Black and Alexisonfire make appearances.
There are some great moments on album and it's ultimately not bad, there is some great lyric writing and I really believe a lot of the emotions and sentiment - however it just doesn't seem to work; too much has been attempted. There are influences of punk folk, country and metal and together it's all just a bit of a mess. We're told that this is 'the soundtrack for punk-rockers, hip hoppers, pill poppers, young ladies and show stoppers' - I'm none of them, and maybe that's why I don't get it and you know what, I'm OK with that.
