With a few twists (You Don't Cut Another Man's Steak, for one, with its shades of Sonic Youth's Catholic Block), this is Mogwai in full-on stoner-metal mode but with precious few 'quiet bits'. This 'truck is all about the eighteen-wheeled riffs. No time is wasted in trying to find vocals to keep up with the likes of Midnight Sin or, indeed, anything else on offer with this debut. Vocals from films such as Dead Men's Shoes waft in, but that's it. We are very much slammed from grind to chug and back again.

If this sound like yet another Kyuss rip-off to you, then desist in that curling lip and scoffing snort, oh Professor Snape of musical potions and maladies. Mothertrucker manage to remain on the sharp side, with nary a woolly guitar nor overly-long one-note passage in earshot. Certain sections seem to be cleverer-than-thou but that's never stopped the likes of Mastodon, has it? Now, about that name. . .
