La Roux - La Roux

French for 'the red haired one' La Roux's debut self titled album is nothing short of astonishing considering Elly Jackson aka La Roux is only 21 years old. Singles In For The Kill and Bulletproof are both excellently written and produced. They also have my current favourite made up word 'singalongability' in spades, as do many of the other songs on the album.

There are some obvious comparisons to Lily Allen and The Ting Tings, with the exception being that La Roux unlike the Tings Tings are actually good at what they do! One not so obvious comparison I can hear are to Elbow, this is for melody and the mature lyrical style on songs such as Tigerlily and the ballad Cover My Eyes, which features the London Community Gospel Choir. In fact my only real complaint as that at the tail end of the album it lack something and could have done with spreading the singles out a bit more rather than having them all within the first four songs on the CD.

Other than that, as I said before, for a debut album it's very very good and La Roux have taken synth pop to a new level. There's a range of synth styles in there too from what I call 80's Bontempi right up to modern day Chip Tunes styley.
