Laurie Shenoda started out cutting discs with Carl Faure (formerly of Blackgrass) though he has recently gone out alone; quickly making a name for himself as a real young Turk on the House/Techno scene. "Crash" is his latest, released on the Hairy Claw label, featuring collaborations with Hairy Claw's KO-T and Yam Who as well as Alex Attias who brings Kraftwerk/Germanic influences into the fray.
Hard electronic synths reminiscent of Faithless (except with haunting phasers floating around) are audible straight way, with a tone that seems reminiscent of the 16 bit background music to the original Sega Genesis version of 'Streets of Rage'. Drum layers steadily thicken the sound, the result being both Futurist and dystopian, like an after party with Robocop as the host. The differences are so subtle throughout the songs progression, so under wraps in the background ,that it is quite easy to just left it drift away, yet before long you snap back and wonder if you are really listening to the same track for all the changes that have come and gone. KO-T & Yam Who’s Longstaying Dub is a direct contrast, jumping in head on, straight off the bat, with the atmosphere of a murky club scene once the lights have gone down. A defiant Retro House vibe prevails in this version, taking things back even further with what sound like 8 bit sound samples. The Alex Attias remix is a delay drenched reworking with harder lines quickly appearing on the scene. The dynamics are dramatic, bringing the grooves right down and back up again within a few heart beats.
Quite simply Shenoda's creation is good music to escape to:
-enter office,
-sit at desk,
-insert ear phones,
-pretend you're somewhere else e.g. a dirty Electro club.
The end.
