United Fruit are one of a bunch of weird, heavy-ish rock bands currently weirding out Glasgow, alongside No Kilter, Ex Wives , Holy Mountain and Bronto Skylift, who they've done a split 7" with. This is the first EP from the four-piece, although you could previously get your hands on it as CD-R at their highly talked about shows.
It might be brief - less than 20 minutes - but 'Mistress, Reptile Mistress!' manages to hit all the usual alt. rock touchstones (Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Shellac, Mclusky) and offers hints that United Fruit could eventually break away from them, such as on the catchy grunge of 'Shake' or in the heavy, groovy breakdowns on 'Push It' and 'Track The Hunt' - bringing some new vigour to the buzzed out, disc(h)ordant punk rock.
Back-to-back, 'Final Test's' slower, sludgier sound and 'Future Law's' primitive hardcore show more contrasts, and what fun United Fruit must be when they bust out live.
