Nell's press release goes to some lengths to explain that whilst she supports the troops themselves in Iraq she has no consideration for the politics of the matter. This strikes me as being rather callous. It also mentions Johnny Cash's legendary "Live from Fulsom Prison" (their spelling mistake, not mine) which, apart from being spectacularly over generous is perhaps a little insulting to the soldiers she was playing to, most of whom probably don't even have criminal records.
Deep breath.
So, if you can get past the unfortunate politics, which frankly would be enough to put me off straight away, what's the music like? Well it's ok to be honest, in a very prime-time Radio 2 kind of way. Your Dad would probably find this inoffensively dull. Sure Nell has a lovely voice, and the songs are well put together, but there's a lack of flair or originality. There's nothing that hasn't been done before a hundred million times before, and done better. There are hints of Roberta Flack and Tracy Chapman, and it's definitely safe to say the strongest songs are the jazzier numbers; some of the more rock and roll based ones are a little weak.
