’New Grunge Sensations’? Christ not another one. Some things should be left buried, right? The thing is, We The Faceless are actually pretty damn good.
The vocalist has that tonsils-dipped-in-gravel voice that makes him sound like a cross between Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder, but without the edge that makes aforementioned voices so unique and powerful. Still, it’s early days, plus he’s got quite a scream, reminiscent of Kurt losing it on Territorial Pissings.
There’s something about We The Faceless though, a certain intensity, subtle at times yet always present, that I’ve not heard from a grunge band in at least a decade. I can’t help but think back to the days when I was just discovering music, so bonus points for nostalgia.
The production is spot on, clear as a polished pint glass yet, for want of a better word, grungy as hell. The bass guitar sounds fantastic, using distortion to cut through the mix with ease and give the music a jagged, rusty edge.
The pace of the EP slows down for ’Yellow House’, a cracking tune that sounds like 90s-era Feeder, before they became over-produced stadium goons. Things pick up again before they’re done though, with ’Franco’s Parrot’ a fiery shot of Rage-meets-Nirvana adrenaline to leave you thirsty for the repeat button.
What makes this 3-piece stand out for me is the song writing. Absolutely top notch, to the point where I’m not taking this EP out of my stereo any time soon. I may end up skipping one or two of the weaker tracks now and again, but the rest is heavy, intense, catchy as hell modern grunge music. Forget fucking Puddle of Mudd or Cold, these boys show America how grunge is done in the 21st Century. Well worth a listen.
