Earthless - Live At Roadburn

Here we go, the dreaded live album. Now I'm not the biggest fan of live albums. Unless we're talking Thin Lizzy’s classic Live And Dangerous then I don’t usually pay attention. So the arrival of a full, wig-out live set from Earthless didn’t really inspire me at all, but being the well-served pro I am, I knuckled down and dove into the sonic drink.

Sorry, that’s a pretty shit way of describing it. What you have, in a nutshell, is 4 tracks over 2 discs, segueing into each other of complete wig out soloing, laid back blues riffing and huge stoner grooves. Which are all things I like, so where does it go?

Well that’s the main problem. It does meander quite a bit around almost constant soloing, which given the situation they were put in at the festival is understandable. Having a headlining band pull out and Earthless moved up the bill to fill a 2 hour time slot. You have to fill it somehow.

It's probably more interesting for the people there I can imagine, and that’s the main focus of live albums. To make all those jealous that didn’t witness it.
