DARTZ! - The Sad History of the Village of Alnerique

Having seen Dartz on a number of occasions and owning their first album, I've always been bemused as to how the electric live performance they deliver on every occasion isn't always delivered in recordings, and album number two is no exception here. In fact, I'm disappointed here, and by quite a margin. The infectious energy that Dartz dish out in a live context and the irresistible need to clap your hands is almost completely absent here, and the production of this album is incredibly poor.

What I loved about Dartz is that they were just an incredibly fun band to listen to and to watch - snappy hooks, intelligent melodies and a huge presence on a small stage, and I can't help but thinking that it's a totally different band who've recorded this album. All of these elements are missing, perhaps with the exception of "The End, Moving On", but unfortunately there's nearly 25 minutes of mediocre indie to endure before you get that far. 'Oskar and Ofelia' is probably the best of the remaining seven tracks, but it's still missing that spark of energy and infectious joy that I was so hoping this album was going to provide.

Really disappointing.
