David Essex is a name that brings a cheesy smile to my face, I mostly remember him from 'The River', a comedy from the late 80's about a canal boat. After that series, I remember checking out the earlier films of David Essex including the fantastic 'Silver Dream Machine'. All of that aside, I have never really sat down and listened to his music as just music, for me they were always accompanying a piece of film.
Listening to this CD, which is being released in conjunction with David's touring theatre production of the same name, it was amazing to realise how many of the other songs that I actually knew of his discography.
The styles and range of his voice vary a lot depending on when the track was released. A lot of the nineteen tunes on this collection have stood the test of time well. The early 70's hits 'Rock On' and 'Gonna Make You A Star' amongst others can sit very proudly with all the other songs from that era.
After listening to this CD, I wanted to know more about David's history and checked him out. This man has been around for over 40 years and he has released albums to a massive audience in every decade. He has been a success in theatre, movies and music and should be proud of this latest collection.
I was lucky enough to get to see the theatre production (see my review here.). David Essex's songs have been put into context like Queen's 'We Will Rock You' and ABBA's 'Mamma Mia' but this time the scene is set on a fun fair, hence the title!
It was good to see how the songs had been placed into a theatre show, but to finalise this review and to quote the man himself 'I know I have been out of style for a short while' but with this hits package, he can show a new generation why this man has exciting songs to share with everyone. I for one was one of them.
