Pussy Cat Dolls - Doll Domination

5 out of 10

The Pussycat Dolls' self-titled debut album spawned five top ten singles and their follow-up 'Doll Domination' (featuring an epic eighteen songs) has already given us the cheeky top three hit 'When I Grow Up'. The second UK single is slow jam 'I Hate This Part', which ticks all the right Christmas single boxes; delicate piano tinkling, emotive vocals and heartfelt lyrics, but mixes them with sharp beats and a little trademark PCD attitude that set it apart from more generic festive ballads. In contrast the second US single is sassy 'Whatca Think About That'; mid-tempo, with a great twangy beat and guest spot from Missy Elliott referencing "Katy Perry kissin' on girls", it's infectious and will no doubt be accompanied by an eye-catching video, which is part and parcel of the PCD charm!

Missy Elliott isn't the only famous friend lending a hand; Snoop Dogg serves up his distinctive drawl on 'Bottle Pop', a sexy, electro tinged track that soon becomes repetitive, R. Kelly features on the cheesy 'Out Of This Club' and quite unexpectedly New Kids On The Block appear on 'Lights, Camera, Action', a saucy number about making an x-rated home movie, which would undoubtedly be better than this track.

Big names pop up in the production and writing credits too, but even the likes of Ne-Yo and Timbaland fail to deliver a killer hit; the former serving up a pretty standard ballad with 'Happily Never After', while the latter, although involved with four tracks, only manages to give us one that's decent; 'Whatchamacallit' and even that becomes a little tedious.

Hopes were high for 'Doll Domination' to be laden with pop gems, unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case, but it's hard to write off any semi-decent PCD track, because their image plays such a huge part in the success of their singles and when they come packaged with glossy videos that are hard not to watch due to Dolls' abundant sex appeal and on-screen charisma, hits are bound to be made.
