Aluna - Fall To Earth

With a logo and general sound straight from Master of Reality, Aluna wear their inspiration not so much on their sleeves as in their faces and ours. Weirdly, though, they also manage to capture a hint of the slightly glam side of Sabbath - the side that produced the sleeve of Sabotage, say, or Ozzy's immense tasselled jumpsuit - with opener Spend My Time. It's vocalist Sophie's languid drawl that stands out, though, even as it tries to sound like it's being delivered from a hot bath (particularly when the reverb kicks in). Son Et Luminaire continues as the rest of the band climb in for a soak, but Sophie now seems out of place - like one of the band members' girlfriends standing in for a giggle while the real singer's out firing up the bong. Things speed up just before the end but it still doesn't really do much. Perhaps someone had nicked the rubber duck.

Show Me How turns the hot tap back on, though, with a monster opening riff straight from Godzilla's toilet and the coma-inducing vocals fitting right in. The result is a twenty-first century Sweet Leaf, with the accent on the 'sweet'.
