Review - Montana - Montanimals

Montana - Montanimals

9 out of 10

"It has certainly been worth the wait. Montanimals is a unique beast." Two statements that carry a lot of truth. While Montanimals is a heavy album, it's no metal album, carrying a vast river of themes, big riffs, post hardcore, and melody. Comparable perhaps, to the largely undiscovered talent that is Lakes. Recorded some 18 months ago, the death of label Iapetus Recordings and artwork issues have perpetually delayed its release. The album is finally finding its way out into the world via the increasing impressive Sound Devastation (Fall of Efrafa, Amenra).

Opener 'Snakes and Barrels' kicks of proceedings in style, a great introduction and precursor to title track 'Montanimals', which nods toward an 'At The Drive-In' feel, albeit bastard heavy. The post hardcore beginnings of stand out track 'Lion Power' drives forward, before descending into post rock territory, with much evident beauty in the soaring build up. The opening line of 'The Virgin Mary Had IVF' reads "we've been waiting for you", how very apt, the track builds up slow, brooding, before a deafening heavy section of an almost doom nature, the dynamics perfectly blended as 'Potato Famine' sprints out of the blocks, dropping back down to dischord, bringing an instantly memorable vocal section that you'll be singing in your sleep. "I can't swim because you never taught me anything. And now I'm drowning. And I will never let you down again". The album doesn't wane near conclusion, 'Black Tower' and 'Children's Bones' see things off in fine fashion.

Montanimals is a great album by an emerging British foursome, that from the first listen invokes emotion and aural pleasure, pulling the best bits of post genre's and piecing them together cohesively with seemingly consummate ease.
