It's always nice when a UK band is one of the standouts in a pile of CDs, and even more so when they have such a diverse and unique sound. Fights and Fires draw clear influences from a range of sources - early Planes Mistaken for Stars, At the Drive-In and Hot Water Music as well as UK contemporaries like Above Them, and manage to weave them into a whole that is at once coherent and chaotic, which is no mean feat!
There's no shortage of thundering riffs here, but they're intermingled with some catchy hooks, and the gang chorus are juxtaposed nicely with the softer sung sections and throaty screams. The production isn't perfect, but it captures the energy of the band well. Well worth checking out, and I suspect a band to watch out for in the future too.
