This is only their first single for Big Scary Monsters (released on download and 100-only 3" CD), but that's all it's taken for Leeds four-piece Wintermute to show they can be one of the best signings on the label (certainly at the moment, possibly ever?). It's great that they've already arranged to release their album, 'Robot Works', at the end of April with BSM.
When they featured on a compilation by BSM's sister label Alcopop Wintermute sounded like a proto-At The Drive-In, they're spiky indie-rock punctuated by hardcore shouting and jagged riffs. On 'Dead Or Not He Was Wearing Sunglasses' they're sound has been refined in to a scrappy post-punk, danceable enough to become an indie disco hit at least. And while Wintermute are more rough 'n' ready, they have a knack with chorus not far off more Leeds natives, Kaiser Chiefs.
B-side 'Abandone My Boy!' is less urgent, instead taking on the relaxed indie-math of cult bands like American Football (popular among fellow BSM-ers This Town Needs Guns). Combined with 'Dead Or Not.' it makes Wintermute another exciting Leeds alt. rock prospect, to join Pulled Apart By Horses and Dinosaur Pile-Up.
