I can’t help but feel as though had Hot Gossip been around 5 years ago they may have fared better. See, Hot Gossip haven’t touched, let alone broke any moulds and therefore with "You Look Faster When You Are Young" have made an album that sounds truly outdated. Already.
That’s not to say it's not without its charm, the record pulses along with remarkable intensity. There’s some good guitar work and some genuinely decent slabs of indie pop akin at times to the likes of Los Campenios and; to a lesser extend Franz Ferdenand.
However, it does grate. And, though there's a lot going in the different tracks there isn't a huge amount of diversity. Plus they run out of ideas pretty quickly - and ultimately become repetitive.
They're from Milan! I’m not sure why, but that seems too hard to believe as there’s something very English sounding about them. Whether it’s the production of the record, or the fact they sound a lot like the bands that were on the ’Shine’ Completions I don’t know - but it certainly surprised me.
The record is immeasurably radio friendly, namely ’Everybody Else’ and ’You Name It’. But in truth I can’t really see anyone wanting to play them. What should be upbeat and positive actually leaves the listener bored and ultimately irritated. There are better bands, doing similar music, also doing it a long time ago many years ago.
As I listened to the album over the weekend my girlfriend (a big fan of ’spikey’ indie) asked me why I was listening to Alphabeat. At this point I needed a rest.
