Holy State - EP

A lot of the time, press releases for new bands are filled with superlatives and phrases like "the new." and almost inevitably the actual music is a huge disappointment. Holy State's press release is full of such potential hyperbole, but something about it shone through - there's a genuine sense of enthusiasm for music there, and that filled me with hope for the EP.

It lives up to the hype, more or less. Holy State aren't going to take over the world with their brand of punk rock fury. It's nothing new, really. Think early Fugazi, Jesus Lizard and Drive Like Jehu with a smattering of Give up the Ghost, Gallows and Boy Sets Fire when they were good. There's no over reliance on distortion or effects, but equally there's no shortage of musicianship or songwriting skills. If you like your rock infused with punk attitude and the kind of energy only a few select bands can muster then you could do a LOT worse than picking this up.
