Pombagira is allegedly a spirit in the Afro-Brazilian religion of Quimbanda mistaken for the devil. She is the protector of the downtrodden, prostitutes and poor. Respected she will grant you anything, defied she will destroy, which is a pretty good way of describing the London based band that take their name from her. Get into it and there is some serious riffing to be had, deny it and you will regret not getting into them while you can. "Castdown Earthbound" kicks it all off with huge, fuzzy as hell riffs. Repeating the same pattern for the duration, but the hypnotic quality of the riffs slows down the thought that it's going to get repetitive. The bass throbbing under them while hoarse vocals shout across the top. Pombagira also have a very psychedelic side to them, probably explaining why this album comes on 2 discs. The opening track eventually simmers down into spacious ambience and droned clean vocals before the drawn out riffs return for more rockin' out. This is pretty much the pattern for the rest of the album, but it's done well enough and the riffs are interesting enough to keep the drawn out nature of the songs coherent and retain your attention. Sort of like a more decisive Ramesses or Electric Wizard. Lead heavy but with enough depth and vision to appeal to people outside any stoner/doom bracket. A release well worthy of investigating by all accounts. If only for the awesome riffing on display. Listen: www.myspace.com/pombagiradoom
