Avenged Sevenfold - Dear God (Single)

9 out of 10

Eight bars into 'Dear God' I stopped the CD player. Opening the drawer I peered inside and pulled the disc out, just to check I had put the right song on. The label said Avenged Sevenfold after all, but instead of the usual noise-mongering, I was confronted with a veritable nomination for best newcomer at this year's Country Music Television awards. Complete with acoustic intro and haunting steel-slide guitars, 'Dear God' confused my musical senses. So, when the song was over I listened again. And again. And again.

This is a single that will break down preconceived ideas of what constitutes a modern metal band and despite its rather cheesy sentiment; the song's construction is solid. The vocal harmonies, layered instruments and intricate melodies shine through and demonstrate that Avenged Sevenfold are capable of so much more than what we have heard so far.

Avenged Sevenfold will issue the single 'Dear God' with 'A Little Piece of Heaven' as a limited edition single on July 7th to coincide with this summer's festival dates and Twickenham Stadium show as support to Iron Maiden.
