I don't know if I've ever met anyone with such self belief as Luke Leighfield, and then to go on to prove that they were right to be so self-assured. Having first come across Luke when he was performing under the moniker Simply Luke Leighfield and he sent me "My First Demo!" to review I was immediately impressed with his talent and down-to-earth approach to music, but he was a bit rough around the edges with some out of tune vocals, over-simple piano and a bit of a low-budget recording production quality to it. What he did have was stacks of enthusiasm and raw talent, which many young musicians think they have, but unfortunately (For them and for the listening public) do not. Whilst many people might have buckled under the pressure of critics and internet-warriors telling you negative comments Luke Leighfield has gone on to prove them wrong through his own dog-eared determination to succeed and to constantly improve. Since May 2005 he has been anything but lazy, releasing "My First Demo!" (May 2005), "Simple Songs For Complex Minds" (June 2005), "Garde Ta Foy" (January 2006), Spring Demo ’06 (February 2006), "Summers And Kisses And Things That We’re Missing" (May 2006), "I’m So Confused By Christmas" (November 2006), "Garde Ta Foy, Garde Ta Foy" (December 2006), "Sam Isaac / Luke Leighfield Split Single" (April 2007), and finally "Fan The Flames" (October 2007) all the while playing people's living rooms, bedrooms, proper venues and festivals (Totaling in over 300 gigs already). "If You Haven't Got Anything To Say" is actually Luke Leighfield's first proper single to be released and is taken from last years "Fan The Flames" album which by all accounts is rather good! It's singer-songwriter fair yes, but with the addition of piano instead of acoustic guitar and many many of his friends helping on other instrumentation. It's far more cheery and hopeful than a lot of the other music coming from this camp and along with friends Sam Isaac, Tellison, Dartz and Dave House they are creating a lovely scene in the UK right now. The b-side is "Coming Of Age" which is a bit more of a demo I would say for future album material as the drums sound a bit more hollow than on "Fan The Flames", but it's still a solid song and helps keep people like me very happy and excited for a brand new album sometime in 2008. Luke Leighfield is a refreshingly honest and talented young man that as a homegrown talent we should all keep our eye on him as with determination like this he could quite frankly go anywhere.
