I was never a massive Bush fan it must be said, so when I first heard front man Gavin Rossdale was making a solo album, I felt largely indifferent - but I did have some expectations... So 'Wanderlust' by Gavin Rossdale, well, production wise the album is crisp, full and layered thanks to Metallica and Aerosmith producer Bob Rock. But is has this veneer on it, a sheen, almost like fake tan. It has that 'classic' style of production, which in my opinion works to its detriment; and in places this 2008 record sounds dated already. Though the backing band are solid and tight, Rossdale's vocals also appear to just sit on top of the music a lot of the time, like they were recorded separately in a big house in Beverly Hills. That said, Rossdale can sing and that doesn't go unnoticed, it's just that at times his vocals don't seem to suit, like he's singing for someone else's band. I've tried very hard to be constructive with my criticism for this album; but when I got to the album's reggae offering; 'future world' (Honestly) it took every fibre of my being not to switch it off and burn my ears. Another thing which struck me throughout the album is how uncensored his lyrics are. There's nothing clever, no metaphors or parallels, just a very uninspiring diatribe of painfully sincere words. Some people may say that his honestly is refreshing. But let me assure you, it's not. Earlier I wrote I was never a huge Bush fan; that said I do now respect the band ten fold more as it seems highly evident that they must have gone someway to censoring Rossdale's 'creativity'. Maybe I am a bit unfair; I mean nearly ever song on the album is about his family, fair enough? However, his wife is of course being the ever cretinous witch Gwen Stefani. I guess Bush fans may find some enjoyment from this record, but then again maybe not. I was listening to this earlier and my girlfriend asked me if I was listening to Matchbox 20. An opportunity wasted. Listen: www.myspace.com/gavinrossdale
