Duffy - Warwick Avenue (Single)

5 out of 10

With Amy Winehouse out of the (Musical) limelight for the moment and Beth Rowley releasing her take on blonde bombshell soul a couple of months too late, Duffy has fast become the nations favourite '60s throwback. There's no doubt she can sing amazingly, that's been said before, but since her debut single 'Rockferry' her singles have gotten less arresting. 'Mercy' was fun and good for dancing, but it was no 'Rehab', and 'Warwick Avenue' is a weaker version of 'Rockferry'. And how many songs about wanting to leave your boyfriend has she got left? Because this is another one. 'Warwick Avenue' could have come out anytime in the last 50 years, there's nothing that separates it from what's gone before; nothing that makes it 21st century. Winehouse is retro, yes, but her voice is unique, unlike Duffy's, and even with Mark Ronson producing her songwriting didn't lose its bite. With Duffy, Brendan Butler and Jimmy Hogarth have fine-tuned her sound too much so that the personality is all but gone. Listen: www.myspace.com/duffymyspace
