The Danes aren't exactly renowned for their music, pastry... yes, big dogs..yes, 'Big' John 'The Powerhouse' Carew..definitely! But now we have something bigger, that's right self-proclaimed as 'the biggest thing to come out of Denmark since Hans Christian Andersen' here are Veto. Huge.
Veto takes their sound from the versatile French blokes in Daft Punk and Justice and mixes it in with a splashing of Alec Empire's industrially electronic lashings and the rocking of a pre-neutered Muse (If a little heavy on the auto-tuning). Their frustrating distortion fills the sound out much in the way 65 Days of Static make use of the latter part of their name. Kaoscillatingly heavy, the music that Veto makes is certainly a strange combination. At times like Brit rockers 'A' and other times they are more than Klaxonesque. This melting pot of influences does seem to touch a lot of bases, unfortunately not all of them are good, and to be honest, unlike a triple fried egg chilli chutney sandwich, having all the wrong ingredients in this situation does not result in something amazing (or hangover curing). In fact Veto seem to do quite the opposite, they cause an unsettling in the stomach, not in an impressive Sunn 0))) way either, but in a nauseous, irritable manner. Sure there are bound to be takers for this little-yellow-box-with-a-touch-pad-tuneage and maybe it's just the vocalist's voice but something about it makes me think of taking a toaster into the bath and that's not a reference to Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit.
The vocalist tends to have the same effect that MCs have on Drum and Bass.. Just a bit annoying, just a bit egotistical and just a bit less listenable than the music they are bleating over. But then suddenly things get interesting and by interesting I mean about two minutes into track six when they really start going for it and rocking and that's great.. for a minute and a half then its back to the same old, same mould, same mold.
