If there's one thing for certain, the Myspace friend-to-innovation ratio tends to be disproportionate and such is the case for Minneapolis' Quietdrive; claiming 100k friends on their one-sheet (actually 98933 at time of writing). Quietdrive's first album since transitioning from the majors to indie label, Militia Group, 'Deliverance' is a few degrees shy of groundbreaking, but should appeal to fans of pop-punk.
Having a breakout debut on a major label (Epic) is surely a contributing factor to 'Deliverance's' pedestrian vibe. It can't be easy for a young group to appear on television, film, commercial and videogame soundtracks, only to find national awareness via a Cyndi Lauper cover. By tradition, a sophomore album is a make-it-or-break-it situation and it's hard to say that 'Deliverance" delivers the goods. The songs are well enough constructed and there's a lot of divergence (within a narrow spectrum) over the course of the album, but there's a certain joi de vivre missing.
As previously mentioned, 'Deliverance' should appeal to most subscribers of Alt Press, but there's just not enough originality here to catch the attention of more demanding audiences (no offense meant!). Adding further insult to injury, "Kissing Your Lips" - a Sublime-ish ballad - is the aural equivalent of Frank Miller's "The Spirit" ("Here we are / We're going through the motions" indeed). But, opinions being like assholes, take a second and peep the Myspace; you just might squeal like a pig, boy.
