All too often alt-folk seems to mean wafty, insubstantial noodlings with equally vapid vocals. Fortunately Sparrow and the Workshop are a bit different. The folk and country influences are definitely there, but so are some dollops of Tom Waits and, weirdly (but successfully) glam rock, and it actually works rather well. They're kind of reminiscent of early Catatonia (before they turned into a rubbish pop band) with less wailsome vocals.
