It's been some time since we had a proper Masters Of Reality album. Harking back to 2001’s "Deep In The Hole" if you ignore the odds and sods collection of 2004’s "Give Us Barrabas" is the last time anyone heard new material by the Godfather of Desert Rock. You won’t be reading this if you don’t have any idea who he is, so I will avoid giving you a history lesson, suffice to say Masters Of Reality = Kyuss, Desert Sessions, QOTSA etc.
"Pine/Cross Dover" is yet another part of the Masters Of Reality constantly sprawling sound. Taking the blues rock basis they have always possessed as a foundation. They move with ease into other realms and styles. Goss’s Ian Curtis-esque vocals on opener "King Richard TLH" perfectly compliment the dark aura the track creates. Elsewhere they demonstrate that they have a fine handle on actual riffs when the need be. "Rosie’s Presence" and "The Whore Of New Orleans" are fine examples.
Masters Of Reality have once again moved along and produced a fine album, and that is what it is. It's not a collection of songs; it's an album in the truest sense of the word. A superb piece of music.
