Blakfish are fucking brilliant.
I am so genuinely pleased to be reviewing this record for the simple reason that I have been a fan for some time. Though you may argue that makes for a somewhat bias view, chances are that if you like music then, given their touring schedule, you'll have seen them live and ladies and gents, live is where Blakfish are at their best.
But if they're so good live does this genuinely translate to the record? Well, yes it does, it does so well, no doubt due to the production skills of Chris Common (These Arms Are Snakes, Minus the Bear). The result is something ballsy, brutal and frankly brilliant. The record is virtually overflowing with potential singles and choruses that will not so much just stick in your head - as make you want to carve them into your arms.
The record maintains an incredible unrelenting sense of impending peril throughout, creating a similarly awkward, yet hugely satisfying experience for the listener. It's hard to compare, and there is a certain British emo/Oxford sound to the album in places, but album opener 'Economics' and closer 'Scotland's Worst Invention' remind me, and begin to match the mood of Plot To Blow's timeless 'Dissertation Honey'. You get the idea?
With current single 'If The Good Lord Had Intended Us To Walk He Wouldn’t Have Invented Roller-Skates' receiving kudos and decent radio play I have little doubt that this year, could be their year. And considering they've been playing together since they were 12 - wouldn't you say it was about time?
Awesome.
