The Green River Project - Dig Your Grave EP

As with my opinion of it, the musical direction on this EP seemingly took a while to coalesce. A minute-long instrumental opens the title track, steering us towards power metal territory, before the guitars begin to chug and the Wednesday 13-aping vocals commence a tale of zombie stalking and brain lust. This indecision between stomping thrash and just playing many many notes continues on 'No Return', with some 'searching for the note' vocals tempered by the sort of riffs that Avenged Sevenfold have been pumping out since they renounced hardcore. However, any pretence at coolness is gone by the third track (or the 'Interlude' as they have deemed it), 'Flight Of The Bumblebee'. Yes, the ludicrous instrumental workout covered by Manowar - you just can't play this and deny you're a D&D-playing geek.

'Nowhere To Run' edges us closer to Judas Priest homage, before it closes with the crescendo of second instrumental 'Summer - Presto'. By this point we're firmly in the fantasy realms, as opposed to apocalyptic ones, and while the playing is top notch, to be honest, I would probably have preferred it if they had gone in the other direction.
