The latest single from Pop Princess/Laddette superstar Lily Allen opens with a hook straight off a spaghetti western, but with something a little bit twisted: in fact it sounds like Merle Haggard ,off his face on crystal meth, and a backing band from the Isle of Sheppey are tumbling around in the background.
The boom-chucka boom-chucka railroad rhythm is complimented by wailing whistles, trebly lead guitar mixed with palm muted riffs picked over and over. The song fits in with Allen's repertoire of high brow subject material, in this case a rollicking tale of a man who just doesn't live up to expectations in between the bed sheets. With doubled up vocals ,street corner harmonies and a knee slapping banjo break down, it's less of the female Mike Skinner/ daughter of Fat Les (yes, Keith Allen sung "Vindaloo" all those years ago) sonic antics that made Allen's name. Instead it's a cleaner Pop effort with friendlier sing along choruses.
Yet this move away from retro Ska / Electropop is a little unconvincing and not as entirely satisfying as Allen's first handful of Mockney pop singles. Then again maybe this cheesy country twist is a sign of Lily attempting to step up to the next level, becoming a new wave Dolly Parton / Loretta Lynn of sorts, singing the lady's 21st century blues: "Oh I lie here in the wet patch in the middle of the bed, I’m feeling pretty damn hard done by, I’ve spent ages giving head".
