You Me At Six - Underdog (Single)

The fact that I saw this song performed on T4 (home of Hollyoaks and The Hills) a few weekends ago should tell you an awful lot about where You Me At Six find themselves in 2010. Their playful pop-punk seems to have struck a chord with the young guys and gals of the emo scene and this enthusiasm is threatening to spill out into the mainstream (Their new album ’Hold Me Down’ charted in the top 5).

I reviewed the bands latest album ’Hold Me Down’ and commented that the catchiness of this song marked it out as an obvious choice of single and I maintain that view, it ticks all the right boxes, it’s sprightly and ever so easy to sing along to. It opens up with an eminently clappable intro, a beat that flows through the whole song, before the pace quickens as it bursts into a chorus full of facebook-status-ready lyrics ("Revenge loves company, three makes it a crowd"). As is becoming the norm for the band, the song slows towards the end before finishing on the high of the chorus once more. Once again, no boundaries have been pushed, but the standard is high enough for this to not yet be an issue.

It’s a very pleasing effort that reminds you why You Me At Six are so highly thought of. If the band can consistently produce songs of this calibre then their reign as ’the next big thing’ in emo will be short-lived and their place amongst the big boys will be confirmed.
