The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang (Single)

Last year belonged to The Gaslight Anthem. They went from being an indie punk who appeared on the Skate 2 soundtrack to having Bruce Springsteen on stage with them at Glastonbury and then all the awards and accolades that followed. One minute they were nobodies and the next, the saviours of modern punk. This single then, is kind of a big deal.

On first listen, I wasn't that impressed. It's good, and by any other band's standards it's great, but it sounds like an off cut from The '59 Sound. After a few more listens everything clicks and you're reminded of last summer when you wished The '59 Sound was just a few songs longer.

American Slang sneaks up on you. It's moody and dark, a mid-tempo stomp where Brian Fallon gets to do what he does best and soulfully growl his way through three and a half minutes of anthemic, slightly melodramatic, but brilliant rock and roll.
