This is the first music from The Automatic since keyboardist Alex Pennie had his head turned by Gallows' Frank Carter and the arrival of Paul Mullen on guitars and backing vocals. While it might have seemed an odd decision by the ex-Yourcodenameis: Milo frontman, going on this single he's definitely brought new ideas and new dynamism to the band and will no doubt beef up older songs as well. Pennie's keyboard role is being split between Mullen and the three original members.

Pennie's departure wasn't exactly friendly and 'Steve McQueen' definitely sounds like a band moving on and maturing; Mullen's vocals fit in much better than Pennie's gratuitous yelping, and hopefully they don't insist on those shrines to David Hasselhoff backstage any more. They've refined and made heavier their punk-pop sound, and lyrically and musically it's their best song since 'Recover'. A great comeback, with a bullit.
