Stone Gods - Don't Drink The Water (Single)

A band formed by ex-members of The Darkness sounds like most right-thinking people's idea of Hell - let's face it, the world does not need another band who see This Is Spinal Tap as a copy of Rock Bands For Dummies. Thankfully, the reality is not another coked-up explosion in a lycra factory. Stone Gods are a right bunch of Classic Rock magpies, if Don't Drink The Water is anything to go by. The second single from their highly-praised album Silver Spoons and Broken Bones, it crams practically every rock mega-band into one shot glass-sized gulp. After the Spirit of Radio intro, we get 'Skynyrd, 'Maiden, 'Lizzy and AC/DC in rapid rotation, together with a coda rip-off - sorry, 'homage' - of Won't Get Fooled Again. Drums are huge, guitars crunch, chug and scream, and vocalist Richie Edwards seems to have been cloned from Bruce Dickinson's dandruff. It all adds up to an instant after-show party compressed into less than three minutes. There's even the bit where everyone's bladdered and briefly puts on a reggae record for a laugh. There's nothing new on offer here, but what is sounds like a great night out, wherever it's played. Here's hoping they can stay off the lycra.
