Children of Bodom, my oh my. From brilliant to good to average to... even more average. Latest album ’Blooddrunk’ carries the torch on from 2005’s ’Are You Dead Yet?’, once again offering moments of potential greatness and falling at the last hurdle. I can almost hear the music itself as an entity, leaning back in its restraints, grasping wildly at the turn of the millennium, yearning to become one with Hatebreeder and Follow The Reaper. Yes, treading along already well worn paths is but an exercise in futility, progression is the key to the kingdom etc. and so on, but unfortunately ’Blooddrunk’ sounds more like the band have run out of ideas than a conscious (Or otherwise) decision to move onwards and upwards. The band are still as technically proficient as ever, it’s just that the songs offer nothing new, and offer something not quite as head-bangingly appealing as most of the previous material in their back catalogue.
The title track here is the first single to be released from the album, and is a strangely dull, mid-paced affair. Hardcore CoB fans will probably lap it up, but for me the song plods along, Bodom by numbers, my eyebrow rising only slightly during the gang vocals/two-chord riff of the chorus, and then ends. Is the one-trick pony on its last legs? I sincerely hope not, but the rabbit was pulled out of the hat a long time ago and the kids want bigger and better tricks. I have a feeling Children of Bodom are going to need more than Paul Daniels to save them from being buried in an unmarked, pauper’s grave.
