Apocalyptica: the band that the majority of the metal world will recognise as "those blokes who play Metallica covers with cellos". Forget all that for a second though, because Apocalyptica have a lot more to offer than gimmicks, no matter how enjoyable or talented they may be. In fact, they dumped the whole covers thing a decade ago to concentrate on their own material, and with 4 albums in the bank since 1998’s ’Inquisition Symphony’, they’ve gained a huge following all over again off their own backs, and for good reason.

The single on offer here is taken from the band’s most recent full-length offering, last year’s ’Worlds Collide’. There’s quite a guest list as well on the album, with everyone from Rammstein’s Till Lindermann to Dave Lombardo (Slayer/Fantômas) lending their collective hands to a band that have sold 3 million copies worldwide. If ’S.O.S’ is anything to go by though, I’m guessing most of those sales were picked up twelve years ago when they did the whole Metallica thing. Live, I can tell you from first-hand experience that Apocalyptica are very impressive to watch. This single however, is not a lot more than watered-down soundtrack fodder (Which funnily enough is exactly the case, being the title song to 2008 film Stone’s War). Lacuna Coil’s Christina Scabbia is pretty much solely responsible for ruining it as well. Lads, seriously, stick to the instruments. And Dave Lombardo.
