Post-grunge colossus Chris Cornell and producer / scary tree clothing label Timbaland have made a concept album inspired by Pink Floyd's The Wall. Let's just pause for a moment and let that sentence sink in. . . . Still here? You're made of stern stuff, my friend. Erstwhile Soundgarden fans will have trouble getting their jaws off the floor after hearing this, as it blips and blops along its glitchy, urban way. After a promising start, everything becomes expectedly airbrushed - Cornell's voice being perfect for this, of course, with it's not-too-raw rawness. He's evidently morphing into Sammy Hagar.
What the concept of this and its album (Scream) is I've no idea, but from the lyrics it appears to be run-of-the-mill pop bravado, coupled with a touch of indulgent surrealism. How else to explain lines such as 'I love the girl / I'm lovin' the desk she wears' or 'She's got a hold / she's got a hold on my neck, oh yeah' ? It's all nice n' saucy for the chorus, though - 'that chick made a part of me'. It's up to us to imagine which part he's singing about, and what it did. Maybe the album provides the meat.
