The musical version of Tourettes? Or sheer genius? Or maybe a lot of spare time? These are all things that could probably be levelled at Jeremy Harris aka Lazy Magnet and his musical vehicle. Being a solo project pretty much, with guest musicians and a live band of friends (a who’s who of Providence names!) this does have the distinct smell of "avant garde" wafting through it on first listen. In fact it's quite a few listens down the line before it opens up to you and you start to get your head around (if that is at all possible) just where Lazy Magnet camp are on the musical map.
For a very rough (and I mean very rough) comparison, maybe Cloudead if they had grown up on art-rock and jazz instead of hip-hop, but pretty much jettisoning the song element for a more free flowing structure. Maybe Mr Bungle, Disco Volante era. Genres come and go in the blink of an eye and every type of instrument can be heard or imagined used by the band. Vocals swap between screams, shouts, melody and female crooning. Whistles, hand claps and cowbells are utilised among the normal array of instruments and even some you would probably not expect.
It does come across as if you're flipping madly between the stations on a radio. Random snippets and verses of different music slides in and out of noisy bursts of static and violence.
In no way an easy listening experience or something to relax to but it's more than challenging enough to hold your attention for many listen trying to analyse the many ins and outs of Lazy Magnet.
