It's hard to be critical of Sonnyjim's mix CD because I fundamentally agree with the principal of the CD. Marked as an attack on the mainstream's view of rap, it's no wonder that in the words of Nas, 'Hip-Hop Is Dead'. The problem I find though, is that for people who like proper hip-hop, then the fact that 50 Cent is top of the charts or The Game's new album has just gone platinum is fairly irrelevant. You are after all going to struggle to change the minds of those that think that MIMS is at the top of his game.

With that being said, I know my MF Doom from my Ghostface Killa, but I'm not too hot on my UK hip-hop. As such, I've only really heard of Jehst in amongst the collaborative artists knocking about here. As such I feel pretty inadequate, although one thing that pisses me off immensely is the constant reminder that this CD is a promo.

The comments that Birmingham is our Chi town, is a little mystifying as well. On the whole though, this Mix CD is a good collection of UK hip-hop. The beats are okay, if a little repetitive throughout and perhaps lacking in the jazz hands of American artists who can employ the talents of hugely successful emcee's to produce their tracks. It's good in principal, but twenty one tracks of music that occasionally blurs from one track the next falls a little flat.

Hats off to Sonnyjim, the Mix CD is a bold move and for fans of some of the artists on here a must. To me though there's too much to digest and for casual fans it doesn't have the instant wow factor. I'm not having a go though, Sonnyjim however might be better thinking small though next time, rather than trying to change a music scene which is too infatuated with itself.
