’That sounds a bit Dawson’s Creek’; stated my girlfriend as she joined me in my living room whilst I listened to The Makeout Party’s offering. In a way she has a point, this album is very American and indeed emotional; so yes it is sufficiently sombre to be the background noise as Dawson exhumes Joey (Or however it ended). This sound however is actually not a bad thing; the album is raw, it's visceral it's very, very ’emo’, but emo at its best. There's no false sincerity on the record, or at least it certainly comes across quite sincere.
The record at times sounds a bit JEW, then sadly falls into the trap of whiney acoustic similar to, I don't know - Plain white T's(?). This is not done well, I mean it's fine and all - just a little bit too frequent and a bit unnecessary. There are however some incredibly intense movements similar at times to Brand New; very loud and epic, and actually very good. This band knows how to orchestrate, they know how to create mood. The music is carefully textured and builds oh so subtly.
God knows how much I'll listen to this album, as admittedly it's not very 'me'. However I am certain there will be many people how will be able to identify and engage with this record.
