Wesley Gibson (McAvoy) has little control over the sad existence he calls life; plagued by anxiety attacks, he spends his working hours hiding from his gluttonous boss before returning home to his pitiful apartment only to be condemned by his cheating girlfriend. But as the saying goes, things can only get better, and they certainly do when the sultry Fox (Jolie) enters the fore. Informing Wesley of his estranged father's death and his status as uber-assassin, she introduces Wesley to Sloan (Freeman) and the secret society of assassins known as the Fraternity.

Wanted is director Timur Bekmambetov's first assault on Hollywood following the success of both Night Watch and follow up, Day Watch. Taking the visual style which brought him recognition, Bekmambetov has created a visceral cocktail of chases, shoot-outs, and violence similar to the Matrix, Equilibrium and Shoot Em' Up. The action scarcely seems to let up; especially during Wesley's training, with each set-piece bigger than the last. Bekmambetov proves himself to be more versatile than just the set-pieces by employing a number of clever shots that emphasise an action; the stand out shot been Wesley demonstrating a new use for his computer keyboard.

The cast too are as good as the director's work. McAvoy is excellent in his first action, and leading role. He ensures Wesley's transformation from inadequate desk jockey to Bourne-wannabe is a believable one, whilst maintaining the boyish charm that has done him no harm. His American accent isn't bad either. Jolie's Fox embodies some of her Lara Croft and Mrs. Smith characters but with the sex factor turned up a notch, whilst both Freeman and Terence Stamp provide the wisdom and poise usually reserved for philosophers.

Though some of the film's outlandish action and special effects can be forgiven, some parts of the story cannot. The way the Fraternity's targets are chosen will leave many rolling their eyes, especially when it is visualised.

In a summer of superheroes, Wanted has created two more in McAvoy and Bekmambetov. Its combination of superb action sequences, inventive visuals and stellar cast will leave you wanting more.
