The Maccabees are one of those indie bands that it appears to be OK to like. I myself fell victim to their charms last summer, and their debut 'Colour It In' was the soundtrack to many a giddy walk to work. This then, their second record was to be met with unreserved anticipation on my part.
In the first instance I was a little de-railed, as much of the kindness from the first album is lost on this record. It's much darker, much bolder and actually much more sinister. Genuinely however, this is a good thing. And the band has produced quite a haunting and mature second album boasting consistent atmospheric, sophisticated heartfelt pop songs.
The album has been produced by Markus Dravs, famous from working with the likes of Bjork and Arcade Fire. This relationship is quite apparent as the record does have twinges of epicness, not nearly as grandiose as the Arcade Fire admittedly. But through the production and the layering a sense of awe if achieved without overshadowing what it is 'you like about the Maccabees'.
This is a record that will satisfy existing fans of the band, and I have no doubt that it will entice a new breed.
.and I didn't mention Matt Horne's totally pointless cameo once.
